A root that runs both ways in this chapter — TO RESCUE, snatch away (hifil, hitsil): 'I have come down to RESCUE them from the hand of Egypt' (3:8) — and TO STRIP, plunder, despoil (piel, nitsel): 'you will STRIP Egypt bare' (3:22). One verb for the deliverance and for the spoil: Israel is snatched out of Egypt's hand, and carries Egypt's silver out in the same motion — the wages of four centuries, and the down payment on Genesis 15:14's 'great possessions.'
