A prince, chief — 'one lifted up' (from nasa, 'to lift, carry'). The Hittites call Abraham nesi Elohim, 'a prince of GOD' (23:6): NWT 'a chieftain of God'; KJV reads Elohim as a superlative, 'a mighty prince.' Both live in the phrase — a prince who belongs to God, and a godlike-great prince — and this translation keeps the divine name the Hittites actually spoke. In Numbers the plural nesi'im titles the twelve tribal CHIEFTAINS who stand with Moses at the census (Numbers 1:16, 44) — one lifted-up head per tribe; and it later titles Ezekiel's coming ruler. → first discussed at Gen 23:6
