To carry, bear, lift — one root doing three jobs in Genesis 13: the land 'could not bear' Abram and Lot together (13:6), then each of them 'lifts up' his eyes (13:10, 13:14) to opposite ends. ⚠ It is also the verb of the third commandment: Exodus 20:6 is lo tissa, 'you shall not LIFT UP the name of Jehovah your God la-shav' — not a verb of speaking. That is why 'taking the name in vain' is probably not a rule about profanity: the idiom is closer to BEARING the name, carrying it as one who belongs to it, and doing so emptily. → first discussed at Gen 13:6
