To RECOGNIZE, identify, acknowledge — the verb on which two of Genesis's cruelest scenes turn, and the same imperative both times. At Isaac's bedside the blind father 'did NOT recognize him, because his hands were hairy' (27:23), and Jacob takes a blessing that is not his. Ten chapters later Jacob's sons send him a bloodied tunic with the words haker-na — 'RECOGNIZE, PLEASE' — and he does (37:32-33), and believes a lie. Then, one chapter after that, Tamar sends Judah his own seal and staff with the identical phrase, haker-na (38:25) — the brother who engineered the sale receiving his own two words back.
