A YOUTH, boy, young man — also a servant or attendant. Jeremiah objects to his call with it: 'I do not know how to speak, for I am only a NA'AR' (1:6), the reluctant-prophet's plea of inadequacy (compare Moses, Gideon, Isaiah). God does not dispute the youth; he answers 'do not say I am a youth' and sends him anyway. The same word covers a wide span of age and status — the infant Moses in the ark, the lad Isaac on Moriah, a king's servant. → first discussed at Jer 1:6
