myeo μυέω myeo

To INITIATE — the verb of admission into the MYSTERY CULTS, and the root behind mysterion and so behind the English 'mystery'. Its perfect passive, memyēmai, 'I have been initiated', occurs ONCE IN THE ENTIRE NEW TESTAMENT: Philippians 4:12, where Paul describes having learned to live with plenty and with hunger in the language of a man admitted to a secret rite. ASV catches it with 'have I learned the secret'; KJV flattens it to 'I am instructed'. → first discussed at Philippians 4:12
