musar מוּסָר musar

DISCIPLINE — this translation's rendering, with the ASV and NWT, over the KJV/NIV's softer 'instruction': from yasar, 'to chasten, correct, train,' musar is the corrective sense that dominates Proverbs — 'do not despise the discipline of Jehovah' (3:11), 'he who spares the rod hates his son' (13:24, the same word). Not neutral information but formation that COSTS: the lesson and the rod behind it, given by a parent (1:8) and despised by a fool (1:7). → first discussed at Gen 1:2
