TO MELT AWAY, dissolve, lose all firmness — the Song of the Sea's verb for what happens to Canaan when it hears of the exodus: Exodus 15:15 (already on these pages), all the inhabitants of Canaan melt away. The exact form namogu stands in four verses of the Hebrew Bible — that one, Joshua 2:9 and 2:24 (Rahab's confession and the spies' report of it, the prophecy and its two fulfilments), and Jeremiah 49:23 (not yet on these pages), of Damascus. ⚠ It is a different verb from masas, the melting of a HEART (Deuteronomy 1:28, Joshua 2:11); the translation keeps them apart as ‘melt away’ and ‘melted’.
