Mosheh (Moses) מֹשֶׁה Mosheh

The NAME — given a Hebrew reason, 'because I DREW HIM OUT (meshitihu) of the water' (2:10), from mashah, 'to draw out.' But the form Mosheh is ACTIVE ('the one who draws out'), not the passive mashuy ('drawn out') the reason would need — the tell of a Hebrew pun laid over a genuinely EGYPTIAN name: mose / mes, 'born of, son,' the element in Thut-mose, Ah-mose, Ra-messes. The full case (and why the Egyptian name argues the story is authentic) is in the encyclopedia's Moses entry. → first discussed at Exod 2:10
