The BRIDE-PRICE — the sum a groom's household paid to the bride's family for the marriage (distinct from the mattan, an added 'gift'). Shechem, desperate, tells Dinah's brothers to 'pile on me a very great mohar and gift, and I will give it' (34:12) — he will buy his way past the crime. The law fixes a mohar for a seduced unbetrothed girl (Exodus 22:16-17).
