A WONDER, portent, marvel — the heavier partner of OT ('sign'). Pharaoh demands one ('give a MOFET for yourselves,' 7:9) and God promises to multiply 'my signs and my WONDERS in the land of Egypt' (7:3). The pair signs-and-wonders becomes the fixed phrase for the Exodus acts (Deuteronomy 6:22; Psalm 135:9) and is carried straight into the New Testament for the works of Jesus and the apostles (Acts 2:22). A mofet is not a trick to impress but a portent that MEANS something — it points past itself to the one who sent it. → first discussed at Exod 7:9
