A CLAN — the middle unit of Israel's social arithmetic, between the TRIBE above it and the fathers' HOUSE below. Numbers 26 is built out of the word: the root appears 94 times in sixty-five verses, in one repeating formula, and the whole second census is organised by it. ⚠ Every version on both shelves prints 'family' or «familia», which is not wrong but drifts: a modern family is a household, and a mishpachah is a descent group large enough to be counted in the thousands and to hold land. This project has rendered it 'clan' since Numbers 1, and keeps doing so here. ⭐ The clan names are eponymous — of Hanoch, the Hanochites — and a good many of them surface later as PLACE names, because a clan that settles somewhere lends the ground its name. → first discussed at Num 26:5
