DECEIT, treachery — 'your brother came with mirmah and took your blessing' (27:35; KJV 'subtilty,' NWT 'deception'). It becomes a thread running through Jacob's whole life, the deceiver repeatedly deceived: he cheats Esau with mirmah here, and Laban will cheat HIM ('why have you deceived me?', Leah for Rachel, 29:25); his sons answer Shechem 'with mirmah' and turn it into the slaughter of a whole city over their sister (34:13); and those same sons will one day deceive Jacob himself with Joseph's blood-dipped coat (37:31-33). The man named 'supplanter' (Ya'aqov) traffics in mirmah until God wrestles a new name out of him — Israel; the true Israelite, John's Gospel will later say, is the one 'in whom is no mirmah / deceit' (John 1:47). → first discussed at Gen 27:35
