miqveh מִקְוֵה miqveh

A gathering (of water) — the word behind the seas' naming, and later Judaism's ritual bath. ⚠ The bridge between those two is one verse in the food laws: Leviticus 11:36 (already on these pages) exempts a spring or a cistern, a miqveh mayim, from a whole chapter of contamination — the one thing a carcass cannot defile. The single item in Leviticus 11 that cannot be made unclean is the item later Judaism took as the standing means of removing uncleanness. → first discussed at Gen 1:10
