A DOORPOST — the upright of a doorframe, and the name of the small case of scripture fixed to it in Jewish homes, which is Deuteronomy 6:9 obeyed literally: ‘you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house’. ⭐ The fixture is not chosen at random. Its first appearance in the Bible is Exodus 12:7, 22-23 (already on these pages), where the blood of the Passover lamb is put on the two doorposts and the lintel and the destroyer passes over the house — so the one place Israel is now told to WRITE these words is the place the blood went on the night they left Egypt, and the next paragraph of the same chapter is a warning not to forget that Egypt happened. ⚠ Deuteronomy 6:9 spells the plural short, a spelling it shares with only one other verse in the Hebrew Bible — Judges 16:3, where Samson pulls the city gate out of its doorposts and carries the lot up a hill. → first discussed at Deut 6:9
