ONE WHO BRINGS GOOD NEWS, a herald of good tidings — from basar, 'to announce good news' (the runner who brings word of a victory, 2 Samuel 18:19-27). ⚠ It is the key word of two of the Bible's most quoted lines: Nahum 2:1 (English 1:15), 'behold, on the mountains the feet of the MEVASSER, who publishes peace,' announcing Nineveh's fall; and its twin Isaiah 52:7, 'how beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the MEVASSER of good news.' The Greek that translates basar is euangelizomai, and its noun euangelion is the word we render GOSPEL — so the herald running over the mountains with news of a fallen tyrant is, etymologically, the first 'evangelist.'
