SOJOURNINGS — the time spent living somewhere as a resident alien, from GUR, 'to reside as a stranger.' A GER is a foreigner lawfully present but landless: protected, tolerated, and holding no title to the ground under him. Pharaoh asks Jacob how many are the days of his LIFE; Jacob answers about the days of his MEGURIM (47:9), and then extends the word to his fathers as well. Standing in the richest country on earth, having just been handed its best province, he describes three generations as people who never owned anywhere — which is the patriarchal story in a single word, said to a man who owns everything he can see.
