massa מַשָּׂא massa

BURDEN — or utterance. Built on nasa, 'to lift,' so it can mean either a LOAD lifted onto the shoulders or a VOICE lifted up; the prophets use it to head an oracle and the versions split (KJV/ASV 'burden,' NWT 'pronouncement,' NIV 'prophecy'). Malachi's first word, and the same root asks two verses later whether anyone will 'lift up your face.' → first discussed at Malachi 1:1
