A FIGURED STONE — from a root for seeing or picturing, an object carved or set with an image meant to be gazed at. It is a rare word: searched consonantally, it occurs in exactly three verses of the whole Hebrew Bible. Numbers 33:52 lists it as the first of three things Israel must destroy in Canaan — figured stones, molten images (massekah — already this project's own word for the golden calf, Exodus 32:4), and high places (bamah) — three objects, three verbs, kept apart rather than flattened into one English word. Leviticus 26:1 (already on these pages) forbids setting one up 'to bow down upon it'; Ezekiel 8:12 (not yet on these pages) has the elders of Israel worship idols in a private 'chamber of his maskit,' in the dark, convinced 'Jehovah does not see us.' → first discussed at Num 33:52
