masa מַסָּע masa

A STAGE, a leg of a journey — from nasa, 'to pull up (a tent peg), to set out.' It is the chapter's own title-word: Numbers 33:1-2 opens 'these are the masei (stages) of the children of Israel... Moses wrote their departures according to their masa'eihem' — the identical root behind vayis'u, 'and they journeyed,' repeated at the head of forty-two of that chapter's fifty-six verses. ⚠ Not related to nasa (נשא), 'to lift, to carry, to bear guilt' — a different root spelled with a different final letter, despite the near-identical English transliteration. → first discussed at Num 33:1
