TO REBEL, to be defiant — to refuse an order rather than merely to complain. ⚠ It supplies the two words that turn Numbers 20: at v10 Moses shouts shim'u na ha-MORIM, hear now, you REBELS, and at v24 God uses the same root back at him and Aaron — al asher MERITEM et pi, because you REBELLED against my mouth. The man who names the rebels is named one. ⚠ And a coincidence of spelling worth knowing about: the participle ha-morim is, letter for letter, the name Miryam with the definite article in front — and Miriam has just been buried in v1. The vowels differ and the roots are almost certainly unrelated (Miriam's name may not be Hebrew at all), but the four letters are the same and nine verses apart.
