TO SELL — a birthright (Genesis 25:31), a brother (45:4, whom you sold into Egypt), a kidnapped man (Exodus 21:16, Deuteronomy 24:7), a captive wife who may not be sold (21:14), and the land, which shall not be sold in perpetuity (Leviticus 25:23, all already on these pages). ⭐ Its reflexive, hitmakker, to sell oneself, is rarer: read across the archived text it stands in four verses of the Hebrew Bible — Deuteronomy 28:68, where Israel will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male slaves and female slaves, and there will be no buyer; twice of Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of Jehovah (1 Kings 21:20, 25); and of the northern kingdom at 2 Kings 17:17 (none yet on these pages). ⚠ The KJV reads ‘ye shall be sold’ and the Douay ‘set to sale’, as if someone else did it; the ASV, Geneva and NWT 1984 read ‘sell yourselves’, the NIV ‘offer yourselves for sale’; the RV 1909 and RV60 «seréis vendidos», the NVI «te ofrecerás».
