KNOWLEDGE, understanding — from yada, 'to know.' ⚠ A LATE word: it occurs only a handful of times in the Hebrew Bible, and all of them (Chronicles, Ecclesiastes, Daniel) are books whose Hebrew belongs to the Persian period or after — one of the small pieces of evidence for dating Chronicles late. At 2 Chronicles 1:10 Solomon asks for chokhmah u-madda, 'wisdom and knowledge,' where the parallel at 1 Kings 3:9 has him ask for a LISTENING HEART to discern good and evil: moral discernment in one book, administrative competence in the other.
