A tenth, a tithe — the Bible's first, given by Abram to Melchizedek (14:20). Leviticus 27:30-33 (already on these pages) later legislates two distinct tithes: land's produce, redeemable at valuation plus a fifth like everything else in that chapter, and livestock's tithe, which is not appraised at all — every tenth animal that 'passes under the shepherd's staff' is fixed by the count itself, with the herder forbidden even to inspect which one it will be. ⭐ Deuteronomy 26:12 (now on these pages) names the third-year tithe's year — the third year, the year of the tithe, a phrase in one verse of the Bible — and then makes the giver swear he has handed it over: I have cleared out the holy portion from the house — a report, made before Jehovah, that a law was kept. → first discussed at Gen 14:20
