A LEGION — a Roman military unit of roughly five to six thousand soldiers, the empire’s own standing occupying force, borrowed here as a name for what possesses one man. ⚠ The choice of word is not neutral in a Roman province with legions stationed nearby: ‘my name is Legion, for we are many’ (Mark 5:9) puts an occupier’s own vocabulary in the mouth of an unclean spirit, in the very land that vocabulary describes. → first discussed at Mark 5:9
