lechem panim לֶחֶם פָּנִים lechem panim

BREAD OF THE PRESENCE — literally 'bread of the face,' the twelve loaves kept perpetually on the golden table 'before me always' (25:30). KJV/ASV's archaic 'shewbread' ('shew' is 1611's spelling of 'show') describes the same loaves David eats at Nob and Jesus later cites by name (Matthew 12:3-4, already on these pages) to defend his disciples for plucking grain on the sabbath — bread set out for God's own sight becomes, a millennium later, legal precedent. → first discussed at Exod 25:30
