OPPRESSION — and the verb is TO PRESS, to squeeze, physically. Balaam's donkey pressed herself against the wall and pressed Balaam's foot against the wall with it (Numbers 22:25, already on these pages); that is the word the law then uses for what a stranger must not suffer — you shall not wrong a foreigner, nor oppress him (Exodus 22:21, 23:9). ⭐ It is Jehovah's own word at the bush for what Egypt was doing, the oppression with which Egypt oppresses them (Exodus 3:9), and the creed hands it back in the first person plural: Jehovah saw our affliction and our toil and our oppression (Deuteronomy 26:7). Psalm 44:25 (not yet on these pages; 44:24 in English) quotes that pair of nouns back at God in a lost war — why do you forget our affliction and our oppression?
