THE TEMPLE TREASURY — a Greek form built on Hebrew qorban, an offering, a thing brought near and dedicated. ⚠ It is the word in the priests' one scruple at Matthew 27:6: blood-money cannot go into the korbanas, so they buy a field with it instead. The same root produced the dodge Jesus attacked at 15:5, where a man declares his property korban, dedicated, and is thereby released from the duty of supporting his parents — money made holy in order to make it unavailable. ⚠ And there is a second, stranger connection: the Hebrew of Zechariah 11:13, the passage Matthew is quoting four verses later, reads ha-yotser, THE POTTER, where a great many English Bibles print ‘the treasury’ (from ha-otsar, following the Syriac). Matthew's narrative touches both readings at once — refused by the treasury, spent on the potter's field — which is an argument that he knew the verse better than a loose citation would suggest. → first discussed at Matt 27:6
