koinōnia κοινωνία koinōnia

SHARING, having-in-common — and in everyday papyri a business PARTNERSHIP, the arrangement two men enter when they jointly own a boat. It covers the common life of the first believers (Acts 2:42), a financial collection (Romans 15:26), and the sharing in Christ's body at the supper (1 Corinthians 10:16). 'Fellowship' is the traditional English rendering and has gone soft; the commercial edge is worth keeping, especially in a letter written to people who have stopped behaving like joint owners of anything. → first discussed at 1 Corinthians 1:9
