THRONE — literally a seat of honor. It is the drumbeat of 1 Kings 1, named some ten times in fifty-three verses: whoever 'sits on the throne of my lord the king after him' is the chapter's whole question, and every party to the quarrel repeats the phrase. Behind it stands the promise of 2 Samuel 7:16, that David's throne would be established forever — a promise the rest of the book watches go wrong. → first discussed at 1 Kings 1:13
