A genuine translation crux — occurring nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible in this sense, seven times, only in this chapter (26:21, 23, 24, 27, 28, 40, 41), always in the phrase 'walk with me/against me in KERI.' The root is disputed. Most translations, following an old reading connecting it to a verb for chance or happenstance, render it 'contrary' (KJV/ASV 'walk contrary unto me') — the sense that treating Jehovah as mere chance, unpredictable and irrelevant, is answered by Jehovah treating Israel the same way. Others connect it to a root for hostile encounter, 'walk in hostility.'
