The Canaanites (Phoenicians) were the traders of the eastern Mediterranean, so the word for the people became the word for the trade, the way 'Vandal' or 'Philistine' travelled in English. At Proverbs 31:24 the woman of valour sells sashes to a k'na'ani; nearly every version prints 'merchant' and loses the fact that the Hebrew names a nation.
