kalos καλός kalos

GOOD — but a specific flavor of good: sound, fine, admirable, working as it should, closer to English 'good-quality' than to the purely moral 'good' of agathos (its near-synonym, also used in this same chapter, 12:35). A tree is kalos when it bears kalos fruit (12:33) because it is doing what a tree is FOR; doing good on the sabbath (12:12) is kalos in the same sense — not a rule kept but a thing rightly done. The word underlies English 'calligraphy' (kalos + graphē, 'beautiful writing'). → first discussed at Matt 12:33
