'He STRIVES with God' (or 'God strives / God rules') — the new name wrestled out of Jacob at the Jabbok: 'no longer Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven (sarita, from sarah, 'to strive, struggle, persist') with God and with men, and have prevailed' (32:29). It answers 'Jacob' ('heel-grabber, supplanter'): the man who always grasped by cunning now prevails by HOLDING ON — refusing, though crippled, to let go without a blessing. The name is re-confirmed at Bethel (35:10) and becomes the name of the whole nation, the 'children of Israel' — a people named not for a triumph but for a night-long, limping struggle with God that would not quit. → first discussed at Gen 32:29
