ENDURANCE — literally a REMAINING UNDER (hypo, 'under' + menō, 'to stay'): staying in place with the weight still on you. It is not patience in the sense of waiting quietly, and not the Stoic's gritted teeth; the classical usage is of a soldier holding a position or a beast bearing a load. Paul pairs it with hope at 1 Thessalonians 1:3 — 'the endurance of hope' — so that what keeps a person under the weight is expectation of something.
