A cry that does double duty in this chapter — and the Hebrew makes both edges sound alike. It is the prophet's 'WOE!', the funeral-toll flung at the living: 'HOY, him who builds his house without righteousness' (22:13). But hoy is ALSO the wail cried OVER a corpse — 'Alas (hoy), my brother! … Alas (hoy), lord!' (22:18) — the customary lament. So the woe that opens over Jehoiakim alive is the very cry his death will be denied: he gets the prophet's hoy, never the mourners'.
