hieron ἱερόν hieron

THE TEMPLE as a whole complex — courts, porticoes, the Court of the Gentiles, everything inside the walls. ⚠ Distinguish from NAOS, the sanctuary building at the centre. English and Spanish have one word for both and the distinction disappears: Jesus teaches and overturns tables in the HIERON, but the curtain that tears is the NAOS's, and Revelation 21:22 says John saw no NAOS in the city — not that there was no religion, but that the one room the whole structure existed to house is gone. → first discussed at Rev 21:22
