gulgolet גֻּלְגֹּלֶת gulgolet

A skull, a head — the census counts 'by their gulgolot,' head by head, each person reckoned singly (Numbers 1:2, 18; KJV 'by their polls'). The word for a rounded skull gives us, through Aramaic Gulgalta and Latin Calvaria, the two names of one hill: GOLGOTHA, 'the place of the skull' (Matthew 27:33). Every head is numbered and known — the same word that tallies an army will one day name a place of execution outside Jerusalem. → first discussed at Num 1:2
