golem גֳלֶם golem

An UNFORMED MASS — matter that has not yet been given a shape. ⚠ It occurs ONCE in the Hebrew Bible, at Psalm 139:16 (golmi, 'my unformed mass'), and it had an afterlife out of all proportion to that: this is the root behind the GOLEM of later Jewish legend, the figure moulded from clay and animated without a form of its own. RV, NWT and TNM now all render it 'embryo'; the KJV attempted 'my substance, yet being unperfect' and the ASV 'mine unformed substance'. → first discussed at Psalms 139:16
