A TONGUE — the organ, the shape a flame makes, and a LANGUAGE. All three senses are live in Acts 2 and the chapter turns on the fact that Greek uses one word: tongues as of fire sit on each of them (v3), they speak in other tongues (v4), and the crowd hears its own tongues (v11). ⚠ This translation keeps 'tongues' throughout rather than switching to 'languages' where that would read more smoothly, because switching hides the hinge. Note also where Luke locates the miracle: not in the speakers' mouths only but in the hearers' ears — 'each one was hearing them in his own language' (v6), where the word is dialektos. The later Corinthian phenomenon (1 Corinthians 12-14) is described very differently, and the library does not assume the two are the same thing. → first discussed at Acts 2:4
