The Greek shape of gei-hinnom, the Valley of Hinnom below Jerusalem — the child-sacrifice valley of the kings (Josiah defiled its burning-place, 2 Kings 23:10), which became the standing name for the fiery end of the wicked; its unquenched fire and undying worm come from Isaiah 66:24. KJV translates it away as 'hell fire' (Matthew 5:22); this translation keeps the place-name — real geography doing figurative work. → first discussed at Matt 5:22
