THE OTHER THREE LOCUST WORDS of Joel 1:4, alongside the common arbeh. ⚠ Nobody knows what distinguishes them. Three proposals, all defensible: four SPECIES; four GROWTH STAGES of one insect (a locust moults five times and eats at every stage); or four poetic NAMES piled up for weight. Only arbeh is frequent elsewhere (it is the eighth plague of Egypt); gazam occurs 3×, yeleq 9×, chasil 6×, and their senses are reconstructed from context and cognates. The versions diverge wildly — KJV 'palmerworm, locust, cankerworm, caterpiller'; NIV reads them as stages; NWT ends with 'cockroach' — and the Septuagint used four Greek words that match none of them. This translation renders by what each root seems to DO (shearer, swarmer, licker, finisher), preserving the one certain point: four waves, each finishing what the last left. → first discussed at Joel 1:4
