esek עֵשֶׂק esek

'CONTENTION' — the name Isaac gives the first re-dug well, whose water the herdsmen of Gerar claim: 'he called it Esek, because they CONTENDED (hit'assequ) with him' (26:20). From a root for quarreling, wrangling, disputing a right. The first of three wells named for what happened there — Esek (contention), then Sitnah (enmity), then Rehoboth (room): a small parable of a patient man who keeps yielding until God gives him space. → first discussed at Gen 26:20
