emet אֱמֶת emet

Truth, faithfulness, reliability — from aman, 'to be firm, trustworthy' (the root of amen). Its home is the pair chesed ve-EMET, 'kindness and truth' (24:27, 49): not two things but one — loyal love that can be RELIED ON, love that keeps faith. The servant blesses Jehovah for not forsaking his chesed ve-emet toward Abraham, and asks Laban's house to deal in chesed ve-emet with his master. The same pair becomes a title of God himself, 'abundant in chesed and emet' (Exodus 34:6). ⚠ Psalm 91:4 makes it ARMOUR: 'a shield and a socherah is his emet' — the thing that stands between a man and the arrow is God's reliability, stated as an abstract noun rather than softened to 'protection.' → first discussed at Gen 24:27
