TO BE RESOLUTE — to hold firm, to steel yourself; the second half of the commander’s charge, and a different word from chazaq rather than a synonym for emphasis. Where chazaq is grip and physical nerve, ematz is the settled determination that does not give way, which is why the pair is not a redundancy: be strong, and stay strong. ⭐ The two verbs are almost always found together. The singular pair chazaq ve-ematz stands in nine verses of the Hebrew Bible — Deuteronomy 31:7 and 31:23 (both now on these pages), four times in Joshua 1 (already on these pages), twice from David to Solomon, and once in Isaiah 28:2, where the identical consonants are a pair of adjectives describing a hailstorm rather than a command to anybody. ⚠ The shelf almost never keeps them distinct: KJV and ASV read ‘be strong and of good courage’ — the KJV with an extra article, ‘of a good courage’ —, NIV ‘be strong and courageous’, and the NWT 1984 inverts the order outright, ‘be courageous and strong’. The Spanish shelf hears the second verb as spirit rather than firmness: RV 1909 and RV60 both read «esfuérzate y anímate», literally ‘exert yourself and take heart’.
