'El, the God of Israel' — the name Jacob gives the altar he builds at Shechem (33:20), the fifth of the great EL-landmark names of Genesis (after El Elyon at Salem, 14:18; El Roi at Hagar's well, 16:13; El Shaddai at the covenant, 17:1; and El Olam at Beersheba, 21:33). It is the first time Jacob claims the God of his fathers under his OWN new name — Israel — folding the name the angel just gave him (32:29) into a confession of faith: the vow he made fleeing the land, 'then Jehovah shall be my God' (28:21), made good at an altar on the ground he has just bought. → first discussed at Gen 33:20
