'God of Bethel' — the name Jacob gives the ALTAR he raises on his return (35:7): not the place but its God, the God who met him here as a fugitive now claimed as his own. It makes good the vow of his first night here — 'this stone shall be God's house' (28:22) — and follows the patriarchs' pattern of naming God from an encounter (El Roi, El Elyon, El-Elohe-Israel). The compound stacks El, the ancient name of God, onto Beit-El, 'house of God,' so the altar-name reads 'the God of the house of God.' → first discussed at Gen 35:7
