Assembly, the called-out gathering — in secular Greek a city's voting assembly (Acts 19 uses this very word for the Ephesus RIOT), in the Greek Bible the assembly of Israel (qahal). No building, no institution. Tyndale therefore rendered it 'congregation' — and King James's Rule 3 ordered his translators to keep 'the old ecclesiastical words… the word Church not to be translated Congregation.' This translation reads CONGREGATION (with Tyndale, and the NWT after him); 'church' descends from a different word entirely — kyriakon, 'the Lord's house' — and carries the later building with it. ⚠ Jesus himself says the word only twice in this Gospel — first at Matthew 16:18, 'on this rock I will build my ekklēsia,' answered to Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi, long before this library reached Revelation to discuss the term at length. → first discussed at Rev 1:4
