An EPHAH — an ordinary dry-goods measuring basket, roughly a bushel, a tenth of a homer. Amos condemns merchants for shrinking it ('making the eiphah small,' Amos 8:5, not yet on these pages) — the standard unit every marketplace transaction was weighed against. At Zechariah 5:6-11 it becomes a vision-prop far too small to literally hold what is inside it: a seated woman, sealed under a lead weight and flown off bodily between earth and heaven — scale answering to the vision's own logic rather than to an actual bushel basket. → first discussed at Zechariah 5:6
