'I WILL BE / I AM' — God's answer at the bush, 'ehyeh asher ehyeh' (3:14), from hayah, 'to be,' in the Hebrew IMPERFECT: a form that spans I am / I will be / I will prove to be, so the shelf splits (KJV 'I AM THAT I AM'; ASV footnotes 'I WILL BE'; NWT 'I Will Become What I Choose to Become'; the Greek 'ho ōn,' 'the One who is,' handed to Revelation 1:8). This translation keeps it 'I WILL BE' to match v12's ehyeh immakh, 'I WILL BE with you' — the Presence promised to Moses IS the Name given to Israel.
